Villastrada
Umbra,
Castiglione del Lago (Perugia), is situated in Umbria on the
border of Tuscany and only 10 km. from Lake Trasimeno and 2 km.
from the lake of Chiusi.

Admire
the facade of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in neo-renaissance
style in terracotta at the beginning of the 1900's, rich in relief
work inspired by the chapel of San Bernardino in Perugia.
Close
to the border of Umbria and Tuscany are the two towers: "BECCATIQUESTO",
built by the Tuscans, and "BECCATIQUESTALTRO", built by
the Perugians, around the middle of the 1200's. A testimony of the
strategic role this area had, both towers being defence and
control posts for opposing interests, on the route between Chiusi
and Siena.
Villastrada,
appears to have been of Etruscan origin, which is backed up by
numerous finds, the most interesting being objects found near the
parish church in 1977 of objects dating back to VI century B.C.
In
Villastrada the owners of the "I ROMITI", have also run
for 50 years, a well stocked supermarket where you can find a wide
selection of local products: pici (home-made spaghetti), home-made
tagliatelle, cheese bread, the best wines of Umbria and Tuscany,
local pecorino cheese, prosciutto ham, salami, fresh and dried
sausages, and a variety of cured meats etc. all of their own
production made with locally raised meat, not to be missed is the
traditionally made 'porchetta' hot, succulent, crispy suckling
pig.
During
the summer season in Villastrada, festivals are held at the
sport's ground serving excellent home-cooking with dishes
associated with both the lake and the countryside: melon and local
prosciutto ham, 'panzanella' a tasty bread and vegetable salad,
bruschetta with olive oil and chicken liver patè, home-made pici
and tagliatelle with a duck or goose sauce, grilled meats, 'tegamaccio'
a fish soup, 'brustico' barbecued fish, fried perch fillets, 'torcolo'
a type of biscuit served with the desert wine 'vino santo'.
Castiglione del
Lago, first inhabited by the
Etruscans, was once the fourth island in Lake
Trasimeno. Full of historical and artistic attractions, it
offers all you need for a pleasant holiday - nature, art and history, old-fashioned values and good cooking.
During the summer the medieval quiet of the village
comes to life with the films, plays, folkdancing and performances of choral music held within the walls of
the old castle.
